Choosing to become an egg donor is a selfless and impactful decision, and at Aspire HFI in Houston, we're here to support you every step of the way. Our goal is to ensure you feel informed, respected, and cared for throughout the entire process. Whether you're just considering egg donation or have already started the application process, this page will guide you through everything from your first steps to the egg retrieval.

There’s no need to have all the answers right away. Our compassionate and experienced donor team is available to provide support, answer your questions, and help you determine if egg donation is the right choice for you.

Stages of Egg Donation

Step 1: Complete our Online Application

The first step is to fill out a short online application that takes about 3-5 minutes to complete. If approved, you’ll be prompted to fill out a more extensive questionnaire about your medical history, family medical history, personality, hobbies, and interests. This part of the application also includes submitting photographs. This is your opportunity to share what makes you unique with us and prospective intended parents.

Step 2: Phone Interview and Medical Screening Process

Upon completion of the online application, a member of our team will contact you directly to conduct an initial phone interview so we can get to know you a little better. All qualified candidates are then scheduled to initiate the medical screening process, which includes a physical exam, bloodwork, ovarian reserve assessment, vaginal ultrasound, genetic testing, screening for infectious diseases, and psychological evaluation. Candidates who pass all screenings are added to the egg donor database.

Ovarian Stimulation

Once you become an approved egg donor in our program, our team will schedule you for ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval. Ovarian stimulation takes approximately two weeks and involves administering self-injected fertility medications to trigger your ovaries into producing multiple eggs. During this time, you’ll visit our office regularly so that we can monitor your ovaries and egg development.

Egg Retrieval

Once your eggs are ready, we will schedule your egg retrieval procedure. Performed under light sedation as an outpatient procedure, egg retrieval is minimally invasive and only takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Medications Used During Egg Donation

To help regulate your cycle and promote the growth of multiple high-quality eggs, you'll follow a carefully structured medication plan. The most commonly prescribed medications include:

  • Birth control pills: Used to synchronize your cycle and suppress the development of early follicles.

  • Gonadotropin injections: Stimulate your ovaries to produce several mature eggs.

  • Antagonist injection: Prevents ovulation from occurring too early before the retrieval.

  • Trigger injection (hCG or GnRH agonist): Initiates the final stage of egg maturation and prompts their release.

Medication Timeline & Key Notes

  • Birth control: Helps align your cycle with the recipient's and ensures controlled follicle development.

  • Self-administered injections: These are typically done in the evening, and our team will provide thorough training and ongoing support.

  • Monitoring visits: Blood tests and ultrasounds will take place every 2–3 days during stimulation to track progress, adjust dosages, and minimize risks such as OHSS.

What to Expect & Common Side Effects

Most donors tolerate the medications without issue, but here are some potential side effects and tips for managing them:

  • Bloating, breast tenderness, mild headaches, or mood swings: These are common during hormonal changes. Staying hydrated, doing light exercise, and wearing supportive bras can help.

  • Injection site reactions (redness, bruising): These are typically minor and should resolve quickly. Your nurse will teach you proper injection techniques to minimize discomfort.

  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS): A rare complication, occurring in about 1-2% of cycles, which we monitor closely during your visits to avoid serious issues.

Your comfort and safety are our top priority. If you ever have concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to contact us—your care will always be tailored to your needs.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Becoming an Egg Donor

Egg donation is a meaningful commitment, and it's important to be sure you're making the right decision for yourself. If you're thinking about donating, here are some questions to help you reflect:

  • What motivates me to donate? Are you inspired by the chance to help others, support LGBTQ+ families, or perhaps fund your education? Understanding your reasons is key.

  • Am I ready for medical and psychological evaluations? These assessments are essential for your well-being and safety throughout the process.

  • Can I stick to the appointment and medication schedule? The donation journey involves several medical visits and a medication regimen over a few weeks.

  • Do I have a strong support system? Having a trusted friend or family member to lean on can be incredibly helpful during this time.

  • Am I comfortable with the idea of a child being raised by someone else, even though I'm not the legal parent? This question helps assess your emotional readiness and comfort level with the process.

Taking time to think through these questions will ensure you're making a thoughtful decision. If you ever have any doubts or need support, our team is here to discuss everything with you.
