Fertility Evaluation

Fertility Evaluations and Testing

Fertility testing is essential for aspiring parents who want to plan for their future families. At Aspire Houston Fertility Institute, we're dedicated to providing our patients with the insights they need to make informed decisions about their fertility.

Our fertility evaluations include testing for both male and female partners to gain a comprehensive understanding of their fertility health. We offer a wide range of testing methods to help identify the root causes of any fertility issues.

What to Expect During a Fertility Evaluation

Undergoing a fertility evaluation can be beneficial, regardless of where you are in your fertility journey. Some fertility tests are straightforward, such as a blood draw and a cheek swab, while others involve ultrasounds and more in-depth evaluations. One of our physicians will carefully review your medical history and that of your partner (if applicable) to determine which tests may be most beneficial and how best to move forward based on your family-building goals.

When to Schedule a Fertility Evaluation

If you're considering using any assistive reproductive technology (ART) such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF), you should undergo a comprehensive fertility evaluation. This can enhance your chances of achieving a successful pregnancy and potentially save you time and money in the long run.

It's also advisable to schedule a fertility evaluation if you've been trying to conceive for one year without success if you're under 35 years old, or after six months if you're 35 or older. This evaluation can help identify any potential fertility issues.

Who Benefits From Fertility Testing?

Fertility testing can be beneficial for all aspiring parents, regardless of their background, gender, or family dynamic. This is especially true for:

  • Individuals aged 35 or older: A comprehensive evaluation can assess your current reproductive capabilities, as both the quality and quantity of sperm and eggs decline with age.

  • Transgender, gender-diverse, or intersex individuals: Certain forms of gender-affirming care, such as hormone therapy, may affect future fertility.

  • Those considering third-party reproduction: Understanding your fertility status is important in determining whether you will need donor eggs, donor sperm, or a gestational carrier to grow your family.

Female Fertility Testing

Female fertility testing can evaluate hormonal balances, the structural integrity of reproductive organs, egg quality and quantity, and more. Options include:

  • AMH testing: Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) plays a pivotal role in female reproductive health. Higher AMH levels suggest a greater ovarian reserve (number of eggs), while lower levels may indicate a reduced reserve.

  • Transvaginal ultrasound: A transvaginal ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that helps physicians visually assess the ovaries and uterus for structural issues.

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG): A hysterosalpingogram is a specialized X-ray procedure that involves injecting contrast dye into the uterus and fallopian tubes, allowing us to identify any blockages or abnormalities that may impede the fertilization process.

Male Fertility Testing

Male fertility tests typically involve examining the health of sperm. These evaluations include:

  • Semen analysis: A semen analysis is an easy and effective way to understand sperm health, including sperm count, sperm movement, and the shape and structure of sperm (morphology).

  • Testicular ultrasound: A testicular ultrasound is a non-invasive technique that provides detailed insights into the structure of the testicles.
