The Sperm Freezing Process
The sperm sample is usually collected through masturbation into a sterile container at the clinic. After collection, the sperm is tested for quantity, quality, and motility (movement). The samples are then separated into multiple vials for freezing. Laboratory technicians use specialized cryoprotectant agents, which work like antifreeze, to help preserve and protect the sperm cells. The frozen sperm is then safely stored until it is needed.
How Long Can Sperm be Frozen?
Semen cryopreservation provides an indefinite time period within which sperm can be harvested. The longest reported storage duration for sperm later used successfully to fertilize an egg is 21 years. Research shows that the overall success rate of pregnancies using frozen sperm is comparable to the success rate of fresh sperm. Like any medical technique, however, sperm freezing has certain limitations. In some cases, some samples may not survive the freezing and thawing cycle.
